A Surprising Blind Spot: Parking Actually Costs Less Than You Think!

On a beautiful, sunny day, the topic of "wanting to go for a walk somewhere while grabbing lunch" came up, and we headed off to Minato Mirai.
While it has a strong reputation as a tourist destination, it’s actually a fantastic spot for enjoying a "lunch + a short stroll," both in terms of value and the vibe.

I’ll be honest: there’s a general perception that parking around Yokohama—and Minato Mirai in particular—is expensive. But actually, many commercial facilities offer several hours of free parking if you dine inside, which is a surprisingly overlooked blind spot.
For this trip, we decided to park at Yokohama World Porters, a long-established, large-scale shopping complex.

We parked on the roof, grabbed lunch inside, and got several hours of parking for free!
(Since we spent over ¥3,000 between the two of us, we got two hours free.)
You can see the ocean from the parking lot, and the breeze is refreshing. (It’s huge, too!) Just pulling in here gets you excited for the day.

Everything is close together—you can head straight to the waterfront after lunch

Just outside World Porters, you’ll find a "classic route"—Red Brick Warehouse → Zou-no-hana Park → Yamashita Park—all within easy walking distance.
The waterfront, in particular, has such a lovely breeze; just strolling along slowly with a coffee in hand makes you feel like you're on a mini-vacation. With the Ferris wheel, the red brick of the warehouses, and the blue harbor views all overlapping, there is so much to love about a walk here!

It’s not just for walking, though—this is also a fantastic area for a drive.
Yokohama has wide roads and a spacious city layout, which actually makes it quite easy to drive in.
Once you enter the heart of Minato Mirai, driving between the skyscrapers and the Ferris wheel feels a bit surreal; even waiting at red lights is exciting.

That scenery, passing between the red brick warehouses, amusement park, and high-rise condos, really captures the unique joy of driving in Yokohama. The Sunny we drove this time looked great against the cityscape, too.

An area that flips the disadvantages of traveling by car on their head

At first glance, Minato Mirai might seem like a place not meant for cars due to concerns about "expensive parking" or "traffic jams," but:

  • Lunch expenses cover your parking.
  • Destinations are packed into a walkable area.
  • It's a great spot for both driving and walking.

…it's actually quite car-friendly.

Just enjoying a chat over a meal and then taking a casual stroll along the waterfront feels like a mini-getaway.
How about heading to Minato Mirai next time the weather is nice for a "lunchtime mini-stroll and drive"?
Turns out, Minato Mirai is actually pretty great by car!
