A nostalgic batting center that feels like after school
This time, as a recommended driving spot from Vivio owner Tashiro-san, we headed to the Umeda Batting Center, a place that has been a staple in Tashiro-san’s neighborhood for a long time.
It’s about a 40–50 minute drive from central Tokyo (perfect for a short trip!), located just off the Nikko Kaido road as you head north.
The nostalgic atmosphere hits you the moment you see the building! Both the signs and the netting are weathered, giving it a great, seasoned character. You can truly feel that this is a batting center that has been loved by the locals for years. I started to get excited. And above all, the vibrant green of the nets matches the green of the Vivio.
Stepping inside, the pleasant sound of baseballs hitting bats echoes through the air.
Crack! Clink!
Local kids, likely stopping by after school, have gathered here, making the place quite lively. It feels less like a tourist spot and more like a pure “local hangout!”
As I idly watched the scene, I realized, "This feels just like after school."
You know that feeling—school is out, some people are at club activities, others are just lounging around in the classroom chatting. You aren't doing anything special, but you could kill hours just hanging out!
Combined with the retro nature of the building, it’s a place that feels deeply nostalgic, even though it was my first time visiting.

Now, to the batter's box!
Time to give batting a try!
First up in the batter's box was Tashiro-san, the home team favorite.
Having baseball experience, there was a sense of composure from the moment he set his stance.
Even though his swings looked effortless, every time the ball hit the bat, it made a satisfying "Crack!" sound.
The balls flew beautifully, and it was a pleasure to watch.
Seeing that, I wanted a turn too. So, I stepped into the box.
...But, reality is a bit harsh.
My timing was off, or I’d catch the end of the bat. It was much harder than it looked.
Even so, once every few pitches, there’s that moment where the ball hits the sweet spot (maybe by luck). The feeling of the impact and the sight of the ball shooting off sharply—that sensation was so addictive that I couldn't stop wanting to hit more!
Plus, at an exceptional price of 100 yen per game, you can keep going "just one more time" without feeling guilty. 14 pitches is also a perfect amount—it ends before you get too tired, so you naturally feel like saying, "Next!" Before I knew it, despite only planning on a few games, we had both played nearly 10 rounds.
One corner of the batting center has old-school arcade games, which are fun to play in between rounds, too. (Yep, this is definitely just like after school!) Batting, playing games, and back to batting again.
It might just be a great way to relieve daily stress or get a little exercise!

Grab a 100-yen coin and play ball!
Batting centers near stations are convenient, but they are often crowded, requiring you to wait in line, and can be a bit expensive.
A batting center like this, which you can only really reach by car, has been loved by locals for years. Umeda Batting Center is unpretentious, rarely too crowded, and, best of all, a bargain at 100 yen!
Rather than making a special trip, the distance is perfect for just "stopping by."
All you have to do is grab a 100-yen coin and start swinging!
Now, play ball!
