Opening the door is such a delight! Nerima’s own “neighborhood convenience store,” Convenience Store Takahashi (Haru-cho, Nerima Ward)

A warm, neighborhood fixture that lives up to its “Convenience Store” name

Just a minute or two from Kan-nana Dori, tucked into a quiet residential street, sits a shop called “Convenience Store Takahashi”—a name that sounds a little curious at first.

This is a place that Ono-san, a Nerima resident, told me about as one of their “favorite neighborhood spots.” Even though it’s only a short distance from the bustle of Kan-nana Dori, the atmosphere shifts abruptly into a calm, residential vibe where a distinctly local air flows.

When you hear “convenience store,” you tend to think of those ubiquitous, utilitarian shops scattered all over town. Surprisingly, though, that image isn’t actually far off. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Takahashi, opened this shop in Nerima—the wife’s hometown—with the goal of creating “a convenient store that feels somehow nice, built together with the people nearby.”

Walking inside, you’ll see families, regulars, and neighbors popping in casually, yet there’s a sense of warmth throughout the space. The phrase “a store loved by the locals” fits it perfectly.

It’s said that owners Mr. and Mrs. Takahashi hit it off naturally with Ono-san through a mutual acquaintance, and their shared desire to help revitalize Nerima brought them together.

A comfortable space filled with the aroma of fresh bread and the sound of vinyl records

The moment you open the door, you’re greeted by the wonderful aroma of house-made crusty bread. The showcase under the counter is lined with breads made from natural yeast, each looking so inviting you just want to buy some to take home!

That said, it’s not just a bakery. Its charm lies in a kind of “convenience-store-style freedom,” with menus covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, alongside a space crowded with sundries and vinyl records.

Inside, records from the 60s to 80s play, blending with the handmade interior to create a comfort that allows you to relax without any pretense.

For lunch, we chose the lunch plate set. Large chickpea falafel, vibrant deli items, and fragrant crusty bread—the plate was so lively and delicious-looking that it instantly brought a smile to our faces.

Of course, it was as filling as it looked, and each flavor was crafted with care—a natural deliciousness that feels right at home in your body. It goes without saying that the bread was top-notch, and the deli items were so naturally tasty that, despite how much was served, I realized I’d eaten it all before I knew it…

This goes beyond the joys one usually finds at a convenience store! It’s truly wonderful to have a shop where you can enjoy such “everyday feasts.”

I wish I had a neighborhood convenience store like this

Convenience stores you stop at during a drive are helpful because they have everything, but they can sometimes feel monotonous and uninspired. But at Convenience Store Takahashi in Nerima, the sight of bread and sundries greeting you the moment you open the door is exciting; it’s a place that makes you think, “This is fun!”

And because it’s so deeply rooted in the Nerima community, you can really let your guard down. It has none of the restlessness of a trendy cafe; instead, it offers a local, relaxing atmosphere that feels like popping into a friend’s family home—a little out of the ordinary, yet incredibly comforting.

If you’re ever traveling along Kan-nana Dori, why not take a detour to this soothing “neighborhood convenience store”?
