The name "Mayfair" is derived from one of London's most exclusive districts adjacent to Hyde Park.
Even among classic Minis, the Mayfair is a model designed with "refined daily use" in mind. In contrast to the sportier Cooper, its charm lies in its calm color schemes and chrome accents—a vibe that feels like a "Mini to be enjoyed in everyday life."
Another feature of this Mayfair is its single gauge. Unlike the Cooper’s center gauge, this one is very simple. That is also a point he really likes.
Adding Personal Touches to a Classic Ride
With a father who loved British cars, Mr. Ota has felt a natural attraction to them since he was a child.
He acquired this Mayfair about four years ago.
"This car is the kind of thing you can enjoy more the longer you have it—like dried squid."
A unique charm of the classic Mini is that there are still many genuine and aftermarket parts in circulation, creating an environment where you can enjoy the car for a long time.
The presence of British cars was always close to him growing up. Once he finally owned one, he found that the more he drove it, the more he fell in love with it. He says the process of tweaking it bit by bit and shaping it to his own preference is what makes it so fun.
The fine details are also packed with Mr. Ota’s personal touch.
The sun visor was ordered from the US, and he loves the hue it takes on when light shines through it.
In the rear, he installed a pair of "Pioneer TS-X1" speakers, which are from the same era as the car. They fit the Mayfair perfectly, looking completely at home. While the overall look is classically unified, he actually installed a Bluetooth unit in a hidden spot himself. He enjoys driving while listening to his favorite music every day!
While retaining its original atmosphere, he has modified the Mayfair with his own hands.
Combined with his small, personal touches, it has become a one-of-a-kind vehicle completely dyed in Mr. Ota's colors.◎
